What is intermittent fasting? Intermittent fasting is not a diet. It is a lifestyle change where you alter your eating patterns. Essentially, for a predetermined amount of time every week, you simply stop your food consumption. The period for which you stop eating can vary anywhere between 16 and 30 hours but a 24 hour fasting period is ideal. This means that for around 24 hours, you consume nothing, not even the “low fat” items or diet coke. You also don’t take any diet pills or supplements. In other words, you do nothing that you would typically do on a diet. For that matter, you can consider this the “anti-diet”. How is it related to weight loss? The idea behind fasting intermittently to lose weight is pretty simple. When you fast for a fixed duration, the calories which are stored in your body will get used up as your food intake comes down. As you stop eating, your body does from a state of “consumption” to a state of “utilization”. Instead of storing up calories, you start using what is already stored. This essentially means that you burn up your fat and calorie storages, which inevitably leads to weight loss. Many research studies have proven that fasting is one of the most effective ways to restore the balance of calories in a human body. If you have, then here’s your answer: starvation mode is indeed a reality, but this does not mean you need to start worrying about it the minute you stop eating. The idea that the body goes into starvation mode unless you feed it constantly is spread by those who sell diet products and want you to keep buying them. The reality is something quite different.
What exactly is the starvation mode? Put simply, starvation mode is a state that your body enters into when it does not get the required nutrients and calories for a prolonged period. When this happens, the body believes that it needs to conserve the calories that it already has for future survival. Due to this, your body starts holding on to calories tightly and your metabolism slows down, leading to slower burning of fat and calories. The result is slower weight loss, commonly known in the dieting world as “hitting the weight loss plateau”. While this much is true, many self-proclaimed diet gurus and nutrition experts expand upon this to claim that your body enters the starvation mode even if you miss a single meal. Some even go to the extent of claiming that as your body starts storing fat, you end up gaining weight due to “reverse metabolism”. If this were indeed true, people who eat the most would be the slimmest but sadly enough, you don’t see that happening, do you? So, what’s the reality? The reality is that the body does not enter the starvation mode unless all the fat reserves are completely exhausted. This may take days or sometimes even weeks together unless you are really thin to begin with. Even then, it is highly unlikely that your body will enter the mode after one or two missed meals. Realistically speaking, you don’t even need to think about the starvation mode until you reach the level of less than 10% body fat. Three week diet Diet and the Starvation Mode With the “Three week diet” diet, you are fasting intermittently for short periods of time, typically around 24 hours, once or twice per week. While this is enough to balance your calorie intake and lead to weight loss, your body does not enter the starvation mode as it still has plenty of fat available to use up. When you stop eating for a short period, your body uses up this stored fat and you lose weight. Since you are not replenishing the fat reserves during this period with artificial supplements or substitutes, the weight loss is much faster and healthier compared to what you can achieve through “low fat” diets. |
